Forty-five seniors in the Los Gatos-Saratoga Union High School District, which runs Saratoga High and Los Gatos High, have been named semifinalists in the 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program, the district announced Monday in its online newsroom.

A national pool of about 16,000

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. named more than 16,000 semifinalists nationwide in September for the program's 72nd competition. Students entered as high school juniors by taking the PSAT/NMSQT, a test that drew more than 1.2 million juniors from roughly 20,000 high schools.

Semifinalists now go on to compete for about 6,700 National Merit Scholarships worth close to $24 million in total.

What comes next

To advance, semifinalists must meet further academic requirements and submit a finalist application. The corporation expects about 95 percent of semifinalists to reach finalist standing, and roughly half of the finalists typically go on to win a National Merit Scholarship.

Winners will be announced in several rounds beginning in April 2027 and running through July.
