Brock Purdy spent most of Sunday stuck in a turnover-heavy stalemate. He spent the fourth quarter winning it.
Trailing 26-21 after Seattle turned San Francisco mistakes into points in the third, Purdy drove the 49ers 74 yards in 12 plays for a go-ahead touchdown, answered a tying Seahawks field goal with another scoring march, and left Lumen Field with a 32-29 victory that moved San Francisco to 5-0.
The NFL gamebook credited him with 19 completions in 29 attempts, 189 passing yards, two scores, one interception, three sacks for 14 yards lost, and a 92.5 rating. He also ran five times for 6 yards.
Almost all of that production arrived after the break's chaos had tilted toward Seattle. The Associated Press noted that Purdy's late surge carried the offense after a first half built more on short fields than sustained drives.
Two answers in the fourth
The go-ahead series started late in the third and spilled into the fourth. Purdy found Mike Evans for 15 yards on first-and-20 after an offensive pass interference flag, scrambled and kept the chains moving, then hit Evans for 23 yards on third-and-10 to the Seattle 26. An intentional grounding penalty pushed San Francisco into second-and-21 at the 37.
Purdy went deep right to Evans again for 28 yards to the 9, then threw a 7-yard touchdown to Brandin Cooks at 11:02. Evans caught the two-point conversion after a defensive pass interference penalty wiped out the first try, and the 49ers led 29-26.
Jason Myers tied it at 29 from 40 yards. Purdy answered by moving 43 yards in eight plays, leaning on Christian McCaffrey and Kaelon Black on the ground. Eddy Pineiro made a 44-yard field goal with 1:56 left, according to the NFL gamebook and 49ers.com. ESPN's recap listed the kick as 43 yards.
Seattle reached midfield on the final possession. Smith-Njigba dropped a third-down pass, and Mustapha stopped Kupp short of the first down on fourth-and-10. Purdy knelt out the clock.
"That's one of the best defenses in the league," coach Kyle Shanahan said of Seattle, per the AP. "There were some ups and downs, by no means was everything perfect. But I thought he was really good in the fourth quarter."
