SAN FRANCISCO - Rafael Devers dragged the Giants back into a game that had already gotten away.
With the bases loaded and nobody out in the fifth, Devers drove a Robbie Ray pitch to right for a grand slam, his 36th home run of the season and the ninth slam of his career, the Associated Press reported. The blast cut San Diego's lead to 7-5. It was not enough.
Mason Miller struck out Bryce Eldridge looking with the bases loaded to end the ninth, and the Padres held on 7-5 to extend their winning streak to five.
Ray, dealt from San Francisco to San Diego at the Aug. 3 trade deadline, earned his 100th career win. He allowed five runs on four hits in five innings with five strikeouts and four walks, improving to 100-89, the AP said.
The CBS box matches Devers' 1-for-4 night with four RBI on the slam, plus a walk in the ninth when the Giants loaded the bases again.
Early hole, late noise
Jonah Cox singled and scored on Eldridge's RBI single in the first for a 1-0 Giants lead. Anthony Molina (3-1) then unraveled. Jackson Merrill doubled to start a two-run Padres second and singled in a five-run third as San Diego scored seven unanswered.
Molina lasted three innings and allowed seven runs on nine hits, including five doubles and Dustin Harris' RBI triple. Freddy Fermin doubled twice in the uprising.
Yunior Marte calmed the game with five scoreless innings of relief for San Francisco after Molina exited, walking two and striking out four. The Giants managed only six hits overall. Eldridge finished with two hits and extended his on-base streak to 19 games, per the AP. Cox went 2-for-4 with two runs and a steal. Christian Koss walked twice and scored on the slam.
