Saratoga, California — A torn meniscus in Casey Schmitt’s left knee has put the San Francisco Giants infielder on the 10-day injured list, with manager Tony Vitello saying Wednesday that surgery was planned and that Schmitt was probably done for the season.
The injury occurred during Monday’s game against Milwaukee. Schmitt tried to stop after making a wide turn around first base, and subsequent imaging before Tuesday’s game showed the meniscus tear, according to ABC7’s ESPN-supplied report.
San Francisco filled the roster opening by selecting Osleivis Basabe from Triple-A Sacramento. That move, announced with the injured-list placement, gives the Giants another utility option while they decide how to cover the assignments Schmitt had handled around the infield and outfield.
Schmitt entered the injury with a .271 batting average, 21 home runs and 55 RBIs. Both source reports described the 27-year-old as a key contributor during the season, but neither set a firm date for a return; Vitello’s July 29 surgery comment was reported as an expectation that the injury would end Schmitt’s year.
For Saratoga residents following the South Bay’s Major League club, the next concrete roster move was Basabe’s promotion, not a final declaration about every lineup role. The team’s stated transaction and the manager’s later update are separate pieces of the same development.
The reports place the diagnosis after an MRI, not at the moment Schmitt left Monday’s game.
