A Japanese supermarket chain from New York is opening its first West Coast store in neighboring Cupertino.

Hashi Market opens Friday, Oct. 9, in the former Sprouts Farmers Market space, according to Palo Alto Online, which toured the store this week.

Founded in New York in 2024, Hashi Market is primarily a Japanese grocer but also stocks Chinese, Korean and other Asian brands and a small range of American products. Operations manager Justin Li told Palo Alto Online that the name means "bridge," and that the company sees itself as a link bringing Japanese culture to the U.S.

What is on the shelves

Li said the store carries some Japanese products that are hard to find at other Japanese markets, especially goods from the northern island of Hokkaido, a major dairy region. Shoppers can expect Hokkaido melon cakes, crackers and other items made with Hokkaido milk.

The store has a large snack section, pantry staples such as seaweed, miso and soy sauce, frozen foods including mochi ice cream and taiyaki, and dairy, produce, seafood, sushi and bakery counters. Non-food aisles include Japanese cosmetics and kitchen goods such as pans, cups and plates.

Opening day

Friday's grand opening is set to include a Yosakoi dance performance, a live bluefin tuna cutting and free sushi tastings, according to the report.

More stores possible

The company also owns Marina Food Market in San Mateo and Marina Grocery stores in Milpitas and Union City, and is weighing whether to convert them into Hashi Markets. Li said there is no timeline for that and that the company keeps looking for spaces that fit.

Hashi Market joins a run of Asian grocery openings around the Peninsula and South Bay, including Mega Mart in East Palo Alto, Osaka Marketplace in Foster City and Fugetsu in Santa Clara.
