Kayla Thornton helped turn a difficult road closeout into a championship date back in the Bay Area.

Thornton led Golden State with 18 points in an 87-77 overtime victory over Las Vegas on Friday, Oct. 9. The 3-0 semifinal sweep sends the second-year Valkyries to their first WNBA Finals.

Her late basket mattered as much as her total. After Gabby Williams stole the ball from A’ja Wilson, Thornton finished a transition layup to tie the score at 69 with 1:50 left in regulation, according to the league-hosted Associated Press recap.

Golden State then outscored the Aces 16-6 in overtime and made all eight of its free throws in the extra period, the team reported.

For Saratoga fans, the next appointment is Saturday, Oct. 17: Golden State hosts Atlanta at San Francisco’s Chase Center at 12:30 p.m. Pacific, with coverage on NBC and Peacock. The Valkyries have home-court advantage in the best-of-seven series, according to their Finals announcement.
