A Rough Outing for the Home Staff
The Sacramento Athletics’ pitching staff struggled significantly on Saturday, allowing 13 runs in a 13-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers at Sutter Health Park. The home team’s struggles began early and worsened as the game progressed, culminating in a historic collapse in the final innings.
Athletics starter Jeffrey Springs took the loss, falling to 3-11 on the season. He pitched four innings but gave up four hits, five walks, and two earned runs. His outing was followed by relievers Hayden Juenger, who pitched one scoreless inning with two strikeouts, and Brady Basso, who allowed two earned runs over two frames.
The damage became catastrophic in the ninth inning when Luis Morales entered the game. Morales surrendered six hits and eight earned runs in his two innings of work, directly contributing to the final margin of defeat.
Detroit’s Offensive Explosion
The Detroit Tigers, visiting from the top of the order, built their lead through timely hitting and a massive eighth-inning rally. The scoring started in the first inning when Heim doubled to center field, allowing Wilson to score for a 1-0 lead. The Athletics responded in the third when McGonigle homered to center field, tying the game at 1-1.
Detroit regained the lead in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by McGonigle that scored Torkelson. The game remained close until the eighth inning, where the Tigers’ offense erupted. Clark doubled to left, bringing McKinstry home.
Báez then reached on an infield single to score Torkelson. Malgeri grounded into a fielder’s choice, allowing Clark to score on an error by third baseman White. The inning turned into a rout when Dillon Dingler hit a 411-foot grand slam to center field, driving in Báez, Malgeri, and McGonigle to make the score 9-1.
