A Historic Comeaway Falls Short
The Ottawa Senators staged one of the most remarkable comebacks in recent memory on Thursday night, erasing a four-goal deficit to force overtime before ultimately falling to the Los Angeles Kings, 6-5.
Despite outscoring their hosts 4-0 in the final period to tie the contest at 5-5, the Senators were unable to secure the win when Quinton Byfield scored the game-winning goal just minutes into the extra frame.
Early Exchange and Early Deficit
The game began as a tightly contested affair, with both teams trading goals early. Tyler Kleven opened the scoring for Ottawa in the first period with a backhand shot, assisted by Fabian Zetterlund and Tim Stützle. However, the Kings responded quickly to level the score at 1-1. Erik Haula tipped in a pass from Brandt Clarke and Drew Doughty to tie the game.
Los Angeles Builds a Commanding Lead
The second period saw Los Angeles completely dominate, scoring four unanswered goals to build an insurmountable-looking 5-1 lead. Trevor Moore extended the Kings' advantage with a tip-in goal, assisted by Quinton Byfield and Doughty. The scoring continued as Mikey Anderson added another goal for Ottawa with a slap shot, assisted by Brian Dumoulin.
Joel Armia then doubled the Kings' lead with a wrist shot that came unassisted. Artemi Panarin capped the second-period surge with a snap shot, also unassisted, pushing the score to 5-1 heading into the third period.
