A Decisive Second Period

The Los Angeles Kings opened their season with a 6-3 defeat to the Utah Mammoth on Wednesday, September 23, at Crypto.com Arena. The visiting Mammoth controlled the pace of the game, particularly in the second period, where they outscored the home side 4-2 to establish a lead that would never be threatened.

Utah began the night with immediate impact. Daniil But opened the scoring in the first period with a tip-in, assisted by MacKenzie Weegar and Tij Iginla. Clayton Keller extended the visitors' lead to 2-0 shortly after with an unassisted snap shot. The Kings remained scoreless for the first 20 minutes, leaving them chasing the game as they entered the second intermission.

Mammoth Pull Away

The momentum shifted decisively in the middle frame. Brandt Clarke broke the scoring drought for Los Angeles with a tip-in, assisted by Adrian Kempe and Quinton Byfield, bringing the Kings within one goal. However, the Mammoth responded with a three-goal surge.

Nick Schmaltz added to the lead with a wrist shot, assisted by Mikhail Sergachev and Clayton Keller. Anders Lee followed with a snap shot, assisted by But and Weegar, to make it 4-1. Martin Chromiak reduced the deficit to 4-2 with a backhand goal, assisted by Clarke, but Utah’s offensive pressure remained relentless.

In the third period, Taylor Ward cut the Kings' deficit to 4-3 with a slap shot, assisted by Kenny Connors and Liam Lefebvre. Yet, the Mammoth sealed the outcome with two unanswered goals.

Liam O'Brien scored a wrist shot, assisted by Maveric Lamoureux and Sergachev, before Anders Lee completed his two-goal night with a wrist shot, assisted by Dylan Guenther and Logan Cooley, to finalize the 6-3 score.

Standout Performances

For the Kings, Brandt Clarke was the offensive standout, registering one goal and one assist for two points. The team finished the night with a 0-2-0 record and 0 points. Utah Mammoth’s Anders Lee was the leading scorer with two goals and two points, while MacKenzie Weegar recorded two assists. The Mammoth improved to 1-1-0 with 2 points.
