A Somber Start Down Under
The Los Angeles Rams’ historic debut on Australian soil ended in disappointment as they were outclassed by the visiting San Francisco 49ers. Playing at home in front of a massive crowd of 100,021 spectators at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the Rams were unable to generate any offensive momentum against a disciplined 49ers defense.
The final tally stood at 27-7, marking a difficult start to the season for Los Angeles.
The game began with the Rams’ offense struggling to find rhythm. San Francisco took an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter when kicker Eddy Pineiro successfully converted a 20-yard field goal. The Rams responded briefly in the second quarter, tying the game at 7-7 after Kyren Williams powered in from five yards out, followed by Harrison Mevis’ extra point.
However, that brief moment of parity was short-lived.
Purdy’s Precision Drives the Scoreboard
San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy orchestrated the offensive explosion that would define the contest. After the Rams tied the game, Purdy connected with Demarcus Robinson on a 39-yard touchdown pass to reclaim the lead, making it 10-7 at halftime. The 49ers did not slow down in the second half.
In the third quarter, Purdy struck again, finding wide receiver Mike Evans in the end zone from two yards out. This score extended San Francisco’s advantage to 17-7. The fourth quarter saw the gap widen further as Purdy threw his third touchdown pass of the day, this time to Deebo Samuel Sr. on a 15-yard strike.
