Redwood Middle School students in Saratoga got an early say in what may show up on future lunch trays, sampling and voting on possible new menu items as the district marks National School Lunch Week, which runs Oct. 12-16.

It is the second year Redwood students have acted as taste-testers during lunch, according to The Mercury News. Shannon Carr, a spokeswoman for the district, said the students gave their approval to several new items, among them beef birria, banana bread and slushies made with 100% fruit.

Students who voted then got a turn at a prize wheel. Prizes included plush toys shaped like grilled cheese sandwiches, squeezable apple toys and notepads.

Peterson Farms and Integrated Food Service, two suppliers that focus mainly on food for K-12 students, sent representatives to the tasting.

The Saratoga Union School District serves 1,525 students from transitional kindergarten through eighth grade at three elementary schools and Redwood Middle School. The Mercury News reported that the district offers free breakfast and lunch to every student each school day.
