Arizona's Pitching Struggles
The Arizona Diamondbacks found themselves on the wrong side of a lopsided contest on Thursday at Petco Park, falling 10-4 to the San Diego Padres. The loss drops Arizona to 45-47, while San Diego improves to 46-46.
Arizona’s starting pitcher Jose Cabrera took the loss, falling to 0-2 on the season. He worked 4.1 innings but allowed four hits and four earned runs. Brandyn Garcia entered in relief, pitching 0.2 innings without allowing a hit or run and striking out two batters. Taylor Clarke followed, giving up five hits and three earned runs in one inning. Juan Morillo contributed 1.0 inning of work, surrendering three hits and two earned runs. Ryan Thompson closed out the Diamondbacks' pitching effort with 1.0 scoreless inning, recording one hit and no walks.
Padres' Offensive Explosion
San Diego’s offense was relentless, particularly in the sixth inning where they erupted for four runs. The scoring began in the first inning when Moreno doubled to right, driving in Vargas to make it 1-0.
The Diamondbacks answered in the third inning when Merrill grounded out to the pitcher, allowing Song to score and tying the game 1-1. However, the Padres quickly reclaimed the lead in the fourth inning. Andujar doubled to left, bringing Campusano home for a 2-1 advantage.
The fifth inning saw San Diego extend its lead to 4-1. Bogaerts singled to left, scoring both Tatis Jr. and Merrill. The Padres’ offense exploded in the sixth. Campusano homered to left center, a 406-foot shot, making it 5-1. Song singled to right, scoring Andujar for a 6-1 lead. Tatis Jr. singled to left, scoring Song, and then advanced to second. Merrill singled to right, scoring Tatis Jr. to make it 8-1.
