Diamondbacks held to one run as Padres win 5-1 at Chase Field

Moreno singled in Carroll for Arizona’s lone run, but San Diego scored in four innings and Bradgley Rodriguez earned the win in a 5-1 Padres victory.

Arizona answers once

Arizona’s offense produced its only run in the third inning Friday, and San Diego’s bullpen kept the Diamondbacks from adding on in a 5-1 Padres win at Chase Field in Phoenix.

Moreno singled to right in the bottom of the third to score Carroll, cutting San Diego’s lead to 3-1. That was Arizona’s lone scoring play in a game that had no home runs.

The Diamondbacks finished the game with a 61-55 record. San Diego moved to 60-56.

Padres build the lead

San Diego went ahead in the top of the first. Machado grounded into a double play from shortstop to second to first, with Tatis Jr. scoring and Rengifo out at second for a 1-0 Padres lead.

The Padres added two runs in the top of the third. Machado grounded out to shortstop, scoring Cronenworth while Rengifo moved to second and Tatis Jr. moved to third. France then hit a sacrifice fly to right, bringing in Tatis Jr. and sending Rengifo to third. That made it 3-0 before Arizona answered in the bottom half on Moreno’s single.

San Diego extended the margin in the sixth when Fermin singled to center, scoring Merrill and moving Bogaerts to second. In the seventh, Merrill singled to right to score Machado, pushing the Padres’ lead to 5-1.

Rodriguez steadies San Diego

Walker Buehler allowed six hits and one earned run over 4.0 innings for San Diego, with one walk and three strikeouts.

Bradgley Rodriguez followed with 2.0 innings, allowing no hits, no earned runs and no walks while striking out one. Rodriguez received the win and improved to 3-2.

Jeremiah Estrada pitched 1.0 inning with no hits, no earned runs, no walks and one strikeout. Adrian Morejon worked 1.0 inning, allowing one hit and no earned runs with no walks and three strikeouts. Mason Miller pitched 1.0 inning, allowing one hit and no earned runs with no walks and two strikeouts.

Arizona pitching lines

Kohl Drake took the loss for Arizona, falling to 0-1 after allowing six hits and three earned runs in 3.2 innings. He walked one and struck out one.

Jonathan Loaisiga pitched 1.1 innings with no hits, no earned runs, no walks and two strikeouts. Philip Abner allowed four hits and two earned runs over 3.0 innings, with two walks and one strikeout. Juan Morillo gave up two hits and no earned runs in 1.0 inning. Attendance was 21,884.
