Diamondbacks can’t overcome Machado’s four RBIs in 9-4 loss to Padres

Padres jump ahead

Arizona spent most of Wednesday, Aug. 5, chasing a deficit after Machado drove in four runs, and the Diamondbacks fell to the San Diego Padres 9-4 at Chase Field in Phoenix.

San Diego, batting as the road team, built a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Machado doubled to left to score Tatis Jr., Merrill singled to right to bring in Machado, and Bogaerts singled to center to score Merrill.

The Padres added three more in the top of the second. Machado singled to right, scoring Bowen and Tatis Jr. and moving Rengifo to third. Merrill followed with a single to right that scored Rengifo and sent Machado to third, making it 6-0.

San Diego stretches it out

Machado added another run-scoring hit in the top of the sixth, singling to center as Rengifo scored for a 7-0 Padres lead. In the top of the seventh, Fermin doubled to center, scoring Merrill and moving Song to third.

San Diego’s final run came in the top of the ninth, when Cronenworth singled to right to score Song and send Fermin to third.

Diamondbacks answer with two homers

Arizona’s offense broke through in the bottom of the seventh with the game’s only two home runs. Arenado homered to left center, a 400-foot shot that scored Barrosa and cut the margin to 8-2.

Later in the inning, McCann homered to left center, a 395-foot drive that brought in Tawa and made it 8-4. The Diamondbacks did not add another run after that.

Pitching and records

Randy Vasquez earned the win for San Diego, improving to 7-6. He held Arizona scoreless over 6.0 innings, allowing two hits and one walk with one strikeout. German Marquez allowed four earned runs on four hits and one walk with one strikeout in 1.0 inning.

Bradgley Rodriguez worked 1.0 inning with no hits, no walks and one strikeout, and Griffin Canning went 1.0 inning with no hits, no walks and no strikeouts.

Eduardo Rodriguez took the loss for Arizona and fell to 10-4 after 5.2 innings, 11 hits, five earned runs, no walks and four strikeouts. Ryan Thompson allowed one earned run on three hits and one walk in 0.1 inning.

Paul Sewald had one strikeout in 1.0 inning, Gerardo Carrillo had one strikeout in 1.0 inning, and Jonathan Loaisiga allowed one earned run on two hits and one walk in 1.0 inning.

Attendance was 20,839. Arizona is 60-54, and San Diego is 59-55.
