A Lead That Slip Away

The Minnesota Twins entered the final innings with momentum, having built a 3-1 advantage through disciplined hitting and timely power. Keaschall opened the scoring in the first inning with a 396-foot home run to left field. The Twins extended their lead in the second on back-to-back solo shots by Lee (366 feet) and Culpepper (400 feet), both to left field, creating a 3-0 cushion.

San Diego answered in the top of the second when Merrill launched a 411-foot home run to center. The Twins regained some ground in the third when Clemens singled to center to drive in Jeffers, making it 3-1. Minnesota added an insurance run in the fourth when Keaschall’s single to center plated Lee, pushing the score to 5-1.

Pitching Struggles Define Late Innings

Minnesota starter Dean Kremer worked 5.1 innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs while striking out five batters with three walks. However, the bullpen could not contain the Padres’ offense once the game entered its later stages. Andrew Morris took the loss after giving up three runs on three hits in one inning of work.

San Diego’s starter Casey Mize struggled early, surrendering four runs on four hits over 2.2 innings with one walk and no strikeouts. Kyle Hart followed, allowing one run on three hits in his single inning of relief. Griffin Canning stabilized the Padres’ pitching effort, working 3.1 innings without allowing an earned run while striking out one batter.

The Seventh-Inning Rally

The game remained within reach until the seventh inning when San Diego staged a decisive offensive burst. Cronenworth doubled to left field, driving in Tatis Jr. and Fermin to cut the deficit to 5-4. Machado then scored on an error during a groundball attempt, tying the game at 5-5. France followed with a single to right field, putting San Diego ahead 6-5.

The Padres added another run in the eighth when Tatis Jr. singled to center, scoring Campusano for a 7-5 lead. Adrian Morejon pitched a perfect inning with one strikeout, and Mason Miller closed out the game with a scoreless frame featuring one hit allowed and one strikeout.

Final Notes

The Twins finished with five total runs against eight hits allowed by San Diego pitchers. The Padres improved to 70-60 on the season, while Minnesota dropped to 63-67. The game was played before a crowd of 41,484 at Petco Park in San Diego, California.
