Padres held to one run as Pfaadt, Tawa lift Diamondbacks to 5-1 win

Brandon Pfaadt allowed five hits and no earned runs over 6.2 innings, and Tawa hit a three-run homer as Arizona beat San Diego 5-1.

Pfaadt keeps Padres to one run

San Diego scored once Tuesday, August 4, 2026, against an Arizona staff led by Brandon Pfaadt, and the Padres lost 5-1 to the Diamondbacks at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona. Pfaadt earned the win to move to 6-1 after 6.2 innings, allowing five hits, no earned runs and one walk while striking out three.

Arizona’s pitchers were not charged with an earned run in the game.

Tawa supplies the big swing

Arizona took control in the bottom of the fourth inning. Tawa homered to left, a 404-foot drive that scored Marte and Del Castillo for a 3-0 Diamondbacks lead. It was the only home run of the game, and it accounted for all three runs charged to Michael King.

King took the loss and fell to 6-8. He worked 5.0 innings for San Diego, giving up five hits and three earned runs with four walks and five strikeouts.

Padres get one in the seventh

San Diego’s run came in the top of the seventh. Campusano reached on an infield single to third, France scored on a throwing error by third baseman Arenado, and Rengifo was safe at third on the error. The play cut Arizona’s lead to 3-1.

The Diamondbacks added two runs in the bottom of the eighth. McCann doubled to left, scoring Arenado and sending Tawa to third for a 4-1 lead. Barrosa followed with a sacrifice fly to center, bringing in Tawa and moving McCann to third to make it 5-1.

Bullpens and records

Juan Morillo recorded his 14th hold for Arizona, pitching 1.1 innings with one hit, no earned runs, no walks and two strikeouts. Brandyn Garcia pitched 1.0 inning with no hits, no earned runs, no walks and no strikeouts.

For San Diego, Yuki Matsui went 1.1 innings with one hit, no earned runs, one walk and two strikeouts. Jeremiah Estrada pitched 0.2 innings with no hits, no earned runs, no walks and no strikeouts. Wandy Peralta worked 1.0 inning, allowing three hits and two earned runs with no walks and no strikeouts.

The announced attendance was 22,008. Arizona improved to 60-53, and San Diego dropped to 58-55.
