A Pitching Meltdown

The San Diego Padres’ pitching staff endured a nightmarish performance Wednesday at Wrigley Field, surrendering 23 runs in a lopsided 23-3 defeat to the Chicago Cubs. Walker Buehler took the loss after allowing nine earned runs over four innings, while the rest of the bullpen offered little relief as the game spiraled out of control.

Buehler faced a relentless Cubs lineup from the opening frame. The damage began immediately when Suzuki connected on a 426-foot home run to center field, bringing Crow-Armstrong and Bregman home to put Chicago ahead 3-0 in the first inning. Buehler attempted to stabilize the situation but ultimately could not contain the offensive surge.

Swanson’s Historic Night

Dansby Swanson was the catalyst for the Cubs’ offensive explosion, delivering a performance that defined the game. Swanson launched a 397-foot home run to left field in the second inning to extend the lead to 4-0. He added another solo shot, a 434-foot blast to center field in the third inning, which also scored Conforto and Amaya to make it 9-0.

Swanson’s impact was felt throughout the contest. He homered again in the eighth inning, a 387-foot drive to left center that plated Dean, Conforto, and Amaya for a four-run inning. He finished the night with three home runs and eight runs batted in, leading the charge against a Padres defense that had no answer for Chicago’s power.

The Fifth-Inning Avalanche

The game appeared to settle somewhat after the third inning, but the Cubs broke it open in the fifth. Following a solo home run by Song and a run-scoring double by France for San Diego, Chicago responded with a flurry of power. Conforto homered to center, followed by a three-run shot from Crow-Armstrong to right field. The Cubs’ lead swelled to 13-2 before the Padres could register their next run.

The Cubs continued to pile on the runs. In the sixth inning, Conforto hit a 384-foot home run to left center, scoring Happ to make it 15-2. The scoring did not stop there, as the Cubs added more runs in the eighth inning, including a single by Amaya that scored Alcántara.

Final Score and Records

San Diego managed to score three runs, with Andujar singling to right to bring Taylor home in the eighth, and Busch homering to right center to end the scoring. However, the deficit was too large to overcome.

The loss drops the Padres to a 43-42 record. The Cubs improve to 49-38 on the season. Colin Rea earned the win for Chicago, pitching five innings and allowing two earned runs, while Jordan Wicks secured the save with three scoreless innings of work.
