Benge Powers Late Surge

Carson Benge delivered the decisive blow for the New York Mets, hitting a two-run home run to left field in the fourth inning. The drive carried 356 feet, allowing Francisco Lindor to score and giving the home team a 2-0 lead. San Diego Padres starter Michael King had been effective earlier, but the momentum shifted abruptly with that blast.

The Mets capitalized on the opportunity, extending their lead before the Padres could respond. This performance helped the Mets improve their record to 58-70, while the Padres fell to 68-60. The game took place at Citi Field in Queens, New York, with an attendance of 26,195 fans.

The outcome was determined by timely hitting and strong bullpen work from the home club.

Scoring Sequence

The Padres opened the scoring in the fifth inning when Fernando Tatis Jr. doubled to center field. This drive allowed J.T. Bogaerts to cross the plate, cutting the Mets' lead to 2-1.

The visiting team continued to pressure the Mets' pitching staff, but they were unable to take the lead. In the eighth inning, the Mets added two more runs to pad their advantage. Jose Bichette grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Mark Ewing and advancing to second base.

Shortly after, Matt Young singled to center field, scoring Bichette and sending Benge to third base. These plays extended the Mets' lead to 4-1. The Padres scored their final run in the ninth inning when Austin Sheets singled to right field, allowing Edward Rengifo to score.

The final score remained 4-2 in favor of the Mets.

Pitching Performance

Michael King took the loss for the Padres. He pitched 6.2 innings, allowing four hits and two earned runs while walking two batters and striking out four. Jeremiah Estrada, Yuki Matsui, and other relievers contributed to the bullpen effort but could not stop the Mets' offense.

For the Mets, Robert Stock started the game, pitching 4.1 innings while allowing two hits and one earned run. He walked three batters and struck out six. Nate Lavender earned the win, pitching one inning without allowing a hit or an earned run.

He struck out two batters. Austin Warren, Daniel Duarte, and Kodai Senga closed the game, each pitching one inning. Senga recorded the save, allowing two hits and one earned run while walking one batter and striking out none.

The combined pitching staff limited the Padres to two runs, securing the victory for the home team.
