A Tough Loss on Home Turf
The Los Angeles Chargers could not overcome a dominant second-quarter performance by the visiting San Francisco 49ers, falling 41-17 in Friday’s preseason matchup at SoFi Stadium. While the Chargers finished the game with a 1-1 record, the 49ers also improved to 1-1, leaving both teams split in their early-season results.
The final scoreline reflects a game where the visitors controlled the tempo and scoring, outscoring the hosts 41-17 across four quarters.
Second-Quarter Surge Decides Game
The game was effectively decided in the second period, when the 49ers scored 20 points to the Chargers' three. The hosts opened the scoring with a 48-yard field goal by Eddy Pineiro, but San Francisco quickly answered. Cameron Dicker kicked a 21-yard field goal to tie the game at 3-3.
From there, the 49ers pulled away. Sincere McCormick ran for a 7-yard touchdown, followed by an 83-yard punt return for a touchdown by Jacob Cowing. Pineiro added a 45-yard field goal to end the half, giving San Francisco a 20-3 lead.
The Chargers managed only 3 points in the first half, leaving them chasing the game for the remainder of the contest.
Third and Fourth Quarter Efforts
In the third quarter, the Chargers showed some fight but could not close the gap. Junior Colson returned an interception 16 yards for a touchdown, though the two-point conversion failed. The 49ers responded with a 1-yard run by Khalil Herbert to extend their lead to 27-9.
The fourth quarter saw both teams score. Adrian Martinez ran for a 9-yard touchdown and then connected with Jordan Watkins on a 17-yard pass for another score, pushing the 49ers lead to 41-9. The Chargers salvaged some pride with a 28-yard pass from DJ Uiagalelei to Jerand Bradley for a touchdown, converting a two-point play to make the final score 41-17.
