A Difficult Start in Australia
The Los Angeles Rams opened their 2026 season with a significant loss, falling 27-7 to the visiting San Francisco 49ers. The contest took place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where an attendance of 100,021 witnessed the 49ers assert dominance early and maintain control throughout the four quarters.
For the Rams, the result leaves them with a 0-1 record, while San Francisco improved to 1-0 in the first week of the season.
49ers Establish Lead
San Francisco struck first in the opening period, with kicker Eddy Pineiro connecting on a 20-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead. The Rams responded in the second quarter, with Kyren Williams rushing five yards for a touchdown, followed by a successful kick by Harrison Mevis. This sequence gave Los Angeles a 7-3 advantage.
However, the momentum shifted back to the visitors later in the half. Brock Purdy found Demarcus Robinson for a 39-yard passing touchdown, and Pineiro’s subsequent kick extended the 49ers’ lead to 10-7 by halftime. The Rams were unable to add further points in the second half, finishing with only seven total points.
Purdy’s Efficient Performance
Brock Purdy was the primary offensive engine for San Francisco, completing 25 of 34 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns while throwing one interception. His connection with the receiving corps was evident, as Demarcus Robinson finished with two receptions for 50 yards and a touchdown. Christian McCaffrey provided a reliable ground game, rushing for 68 yards on 10 carries.
In the third quarter, Purdy connected with Mike Evans for a two-yard touchdown, pushing the score to 17-7. The 49ers added to their lead in the fourth quarter when Purdy threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Deebo Samuel Sr. Pineiro sealed the victory with a 56-yard field goal, bringing the final margin to 20 points.
Rams Struggle Offensively
The Los Angeles offense struggled to sustain drives against the 49ers’ defense. Quarterback Matthew Stafford completed 15 of 25 passes for 155 yards but was intercepted once. On the ground, Blake Corum carried the ball 10 times for 54 yards.
The receiving corps showed some promise, with Puka Nacua leading the team with five receptions for 74 yards. Despite these individual efforts, the Rams could not overcome the early deficit or generate sufficient scoring opportunities to challenge San Francisco, resulting in a decisive 27-7 loss in their season debut.
