Late Rally Caps Comeback
The San Francisco Giants erased a five-run deficit to defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-6 on Wednesday at Oracle Park. The visiting Cardinals held a substantial lead for most of the contest, but a four-run surge in the eighth inning flipped the script for the home side. The final score of 7-6 was settled by a two-run double from Ryan Whitcomb, which provided the decisive margin of victory.
Cardinals Build Early Lead
St. Louis established an early advantage, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Eldridge singled to left field and allowed Gilbert to score. The Giants answered immediately in the second, with Gorman’s single to left bringing home Báez to tie the game at 1-1. The Cardinals then extended their lead in the third inning. Bernal hit a three-run home run to right field, traveling 378 feet, scoring Herrera and Burleson. The lead grew to 4-1 in the fifth when Torres scored on a ground ball into a double play, and reached 6-1 in the sixth when Saggese scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Fermín.
Eighth-Inning Surge
The Giants mounted a critical rally in the top of the eighth inning. Eldridge singled to center, scoring B. Harris and Cavanaugh to cut the deficit to 6-3. Cox reached on an infield single to shortstop, allowing Hill to score. Lee then doubled to right, bringing home Cox and Eldridge to tie the game at 6-6. With the bases loaded, Whitcomb doubled to right field, scoring Lee and giving San Francisco the 7-6 lead.
Pitching and Records
For the Cardinals, Andre Pallante pitched five innings, allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out four batters. Justin Bruihl and Luis Gastelum each pitched one inning without allowing hits or earned runs. Cade Winquest pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing two hits and four earned runs. George Soriano took the loss in one-third of an inning, allowing three hits and two earned runs. For the Giants, Blade Tidwell pitched four innings, allowing five hits and four earned runs while striking out two batters. Philip Abner pitched two innings, allowing one hit and one walk. Matt Wilkinson secured the win with two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out two batters. Trent Harris recorded the save in one scoreless inning, allowing one hit. The Giants improved to 62-85, while the Cardinals fell to 72-75.
