Late Rally Falls Short
The San Francisco Giants mounted a spirited comeback attempt on Sunday, but it ultimately came up one run short in a 6-5 loss to the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. Despite a dramatic eighth-inning tie and a late ninth-inning push, the Giants could not overcome an early deficit and a costly ninth-inning collapse.
Scoring Sequence
San Diego jumped out to an early lead, taking a 2-0 advantage in the first inning when Merrill doubled to left field, driving in France and Machado. The Giants answered in the third inning, tying the game at 2-2 when Basabe launched a 402-foot home run to left field, adding another run on Gilbert’s score.
San Diego regained the lead in the same inning as Adames walked, bringing Lee home to make it 3-2. The Padres extended their advantage in the fourth inning when Fermin homered to left (383 feet), scoring Rengifo for a 4-3 lead. Fermin added an RBI single in the sixth inning, singling to left and scoring Bogaerts to push the lead to 5-3.
San Francisco refused to go away, tying the game at 5-5 in the eighth inning. Basabe doubled to left, driving in Devers and Adames. The Giants loaded the bases in the ninth, but Cronenworth’s single to center scored Bogaerts, giving San Diego a 6-5 lead. Tatis Jr. advanced to third, but the Giants could not complete the comeback.
