The San Francisco 49ers have announced that defensive end Sam Okuayinonu has been placed on injured reserve because of a foot injury. This decision means he will miss a minimum of the first four games in the upcoming 2026 season.

Okuayinonu did not accompany the team to Australia for their season opener against the Los Angeles Rams after sustaining the injury. His absence is significant, particularly following a 2025 season in which he started 12 out of 15 games, achieving 39 tackles, three sacks, and one forced fumble.

While Okuayinonu's role was expected to diminish in 2026, he was still projected to be an important part of the 49ers' defensive lineup. The injury complicates the team's plans as they prepare for the new season.

In addition to Okuayinonu's injury, the 49ers have made further roster changes, signing Jon Weeks to the 53-man roster and promoting Khalid Kareem from the practice squad, adjusting their lineup ahead of the season opener. The team will need to modify its defensive strategy as they face the Rams without Okuayinonu.
