The 2026 NFL season opener will give Mike McDaniel his first regular-season game directing the Los Angeles Chargers' offense, with quarterback Justin Herbert on the field. Los Angeles is set to host the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday shortly after 4 p.m. Eastern time.
McDaniel arrived in Los Angeles during the offseason following his departure from the Miami Dolphins, where he served as head coach. The matchup will also be his first regular-season collaboration with Herbert.
NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that McDaniel may have access to plays with Herbert that were not available during McDaniel's time in Miami. Herbert's arm strength could help the coordinator broaden his offensive approach, Rapoport said. Miami had one of the NFL's strongest season starts in 2023 before its output fell later that year, according to the report.
It also raised questions about Herbert's playoff results while pointing to his throwing ability as a trait McDaniel is expected to use immediately. No other information about Los Angeles' game plan was provided.
