Jake Slaughter will start at center for the Los Angeles Chargers in their season-opening matchup with the Arizona Cardinals. The 23-year-old second-round draft pick moved into the role after Tyler Biadasz tore an anterior cruciate ligament during practice last month.
Slaughter started 33 games at center at Florida and had also competed for the Chargers’ left guard position. At 6 feet 4 inches and 308 pounds, he said he had prepared for the possibility of playing during the season. Chargers coaches and teammates helped him adjust to the offense after his move into the starting lineup.
Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel has praised Slaughter’s understanding of the system and willingness to make corrections. Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt said the rookie has displayed confidence and gained the trust of the offensive line, while Trey Pipkins III called him one of the smartest rookies he has seen.
Quarterback Justin Herbert said Slaughter learned the offense quickly and played with veteran poise as the Chargers seek to protect him more effectively. The report was published by sports.yahoo.com.
