San Francisco could lose two players for at least four weeks after wide receiver Demarcus Robinson and defensive lineman James Thompson Jr. sustained high-ankle sprains in the 49ers’ 35-13 victory over the Dolphins. Coach Kyle Shanahan gave the updates Monday and said injured reserve remains a possibility for both players.
Robinson stepped into a larger role as San Francisco’s third receiver while Ricky Pearsall, Christian Kirk and De’Zhaun Stribling have been absent. In two games, he has totaled 84 receiving yards on five catches, including one touchdown. He left the Miami game after making three catches for 34 yards.
Shanahan said Kirk is expected to remain out for a couple of weeks and that Brandon Aiyuk is not an option to return. San Francisco could fill Robinson’s spot through its active roster or practice squad.
Thompson, who is 6-foot-6 and weighs 308 pounds, has played 42 defensive snaps across the first two games while rotating on the defensive line. The 49ers are 2-0 and will host the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3. Miami’s veteran receiver Mike Evans exited with a hip injury but appeared fine.
Romello Height, following surgery for a broken hand, might be available to play. No further details were provided about their status. SportsYahoo.com reported the injury updates.
