Two older adults died after firefighters pulled them from a burning home in Monte Sereno early Wednesday, the Santa Clara County Fire Department said.

Crews were called at about 2 a.m. to a house fire in the 17000 block of Rose Court. Firefighters arrived to find a two-story home with flames coming through the roof, NBC Bay Area reported, citing the department.

Firefighters made a quick search of the home and found the two adults inside. The fire was raised to a second alarm, bringing 10 fire apparatus and roughly 40 fire personnel to the scene.

Both people were taken by ambulance to Valley Medical Center, where they died of their injuries. Their names have not been released.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the county fire department, with help from other local agencies.

Smoke alarm reminder

While noting that its investigation is at an early stage, the department used the fire to remind residents to keep a working smoke alarm in each room of the house, KTVU reported. The alarms "provide critical minutes" for the people inside to get out, the department said.
