Saratoga, California — Governor Gavin Newsom signed a bipartisan slate of state measures on Monday designed to widen educational opportunities, expand homeownership tax relief, and improve administrative coordination for California service members and military veterans.
The legislative package incorporates Senate Bill 296, authored by Senator Bob Archuleta, which increases the homeowner property tax exemption available to disabled veterans across the state. Complementing the tax revision, Assembly Bill 2219, championed by Assemblymember Pilar Schiavo, directs closer operational cooperation between the California Department of Veterans Affairs and county-level veteran service offices to alleviate administrative delays.
Additional enactments focus on higher education access and family protections. Assembly Bill 2054 clarifies eligibility criteria within the state's family temporary disability insurance system to ensure coverage extends to military personnel deployed on active duty assignments, including reservists. Meanwhile, Assembly Bills 2203 and 1346 establish priority course enrollment at public college systems and safeguard in-state tuition rates for returning military dependents.
