Rafael Devers stepped in with the bases loaded in the fifth inning Saturday night and singled to right-center, scoring Grant McCray and handing the San Francisco Giants a lead they did not give back in a 7-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.
That go-ahead hit framed the nightcap of a day-night doubleheader at Oracle Park. Devers finished 2-for-5 with two RBI. The Associated Press credited the fifth-inning single with putting San Francisco ahead; CBS Sports' box matches the two-hit, two-RBI night and lists him at .251/.328/.485 with 78 RBI after the game. The Giants split the twin bill after dropping the opener 7-1.
The fifth-inning sequence
Mitch Bratt had kept the game even at 1-1 into the fifth before San Francisco loaded the bases with one out. Gerardo Carrillo entered and walked pinch-hitter Drew Gilbert. Devers then drove the ball through the right-center gap for the lead. Bryce Eldridge followed immediately with a two-run single to left-center, and the Giants led 4-1 before Arizona could reset.
Devers had popped out in the first while Jonah Cox stole a base behind him, flied out in the third and struck out in the seventh. His other hit came in the eighth: another RBI single to right that scored Osleivis Basabe and sent Gilbert to third, making it 6-2 before Eldridge added another RBI single.
Those two singles bookended the lead San Francisco protected the rest of the way.
Debut starter, bullpen handoff, and Arizona's push
Yunior Marte, summoned from Double-A Richmond, debuted for the Giants and threw 4.2 innings with three hits, one run, two walks and three strikeouts. Lars Nootbaar's bloop double off Grant McCray's glove scored Ildemaro Vargas for Arizona's first run in the third. Sanmartin then retired Nootbaar on a strikeout to end the fifth and picked up the win at 2-0.
Bratt (1-3) was charged with three runs over 4.1 innings on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Carrillo faced 0.2 of an inning, allowed two hits and one run with two walks and one strikeout. Arizona pulled within 4-2 in the seventh when Vargas singled home Max Kepler, but Jung Hoo Lee answered with an RBI single that restored a three-run cushion.
