Oakland’s Pitching Struggles Define Loss
The Oakland Athletics suffered a lopsided 15-5 defeat to the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Wednesday. The loss drops the Athletics to 43-59 on the season, while Arizona improves to 53-49.
Athletics starting pitcher Gage Jump took the loss after allowing six earned runs over 4.2 innings. He surrendered eight hits and four walks while striking out five batters, falling to 3-6 on the year. Relief pitcher Yunior Tur struggled significantly, giving up eight earned runs on five hits in just 0.2 innings pitched.
He also issued three walks and recorded one strikeout. Hayden Juenger pitched 2.1 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Carlos Cortes finished the game with a perfect 0.1 inning, allowing no hits, runs, or walks.
Arizona’s Offensive Surge
The Diamondbacks’ offense was led by a dominant fifth inning that shifted the momentum entirely. Arizona scored seven runs in the frame, breaking a 2-2 tie. The inning featured multiple home runs and key hits that overwhelmed the Athletics' bullpen.
Carroll and Arenado each homered earlier in the game to tie and take the lead, respectively. In the fifth, McNeil homered to right field, followed by Marte scoring on a wild pitch by Jump. Moreno then connected for a home run to center field.
Vargas doubled to center, driving in Arenado. McCann homered to left-center, scoring Vargas, and Waldschmidt homered to left-center, scoring Tawa. The inning concluded with Carroll scoring on a wild pitch by Tur, followed by a single from McCann that scored Moreno, a double from Tawa that scored Arenado and Vargas, and a sacrifice fly from Waldschmidt that scored McCann.
