Extra-inning drama defines close contest
Avisail Vargas provided the decisive hit in the 10th inning, lifting the Arizona Diamondbacks past the Oakland Athletics with a 6-5 win at Chase Field on Wednesday. The victory improved Arizona’s record to 52-49, while Oakland fell to 43-58.
The game began with Oakland seizing control early. In the first inning, the Athletics loaded the bases and capitalized on a powerful swing from Kepler. His home run to right center, measuring 392 feet, drove in three runs, giving Oakland an immediate 3-0 lead.
The Diamondbacks answered in the third inning when Williams singled to right field, allowing Butler to score and cut the deficit to 3-1.
Arizona tied the game in the seventh inning. Marte hit a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing Vargas home from second base to make the score 4-3 in favor of Oakland. The Athletics regained the lead in the eighth when Langeliers launched a home run to left center, a 444-foot shot that extended their advantage to 4-2.
The ninth inning proved pivotal as Arizona mounted a comeback. Wilson homered to left field, a 394-foot blast that scored Walton and tied the game at 4-4. The Diamondbacks took the lead in the top of the 10th when Heim hit a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Soderstrom to score and put Arizona ahead 5-4.
Late rally secures victory
Oakland threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the 10th. Arenado singled to center field, scoring Carroll to bring the score to 5-5. However, the inning was not over. Vargas followed with a single to left field, driving in Moreno to give Arizona a 6-5 lead. The Diamondbacks held on for the win.
Pitching performances varied throughout the contest. For Oakland, Jack Perkins started and pitched five innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs while striking out four batters. He was supported by relief pitchers Brady Basso, Geoff Hartlieb, Jose Suarez, Elvis Alvarado, Hogan Harris, and Luis Medina, who took the loss after allowing two hits and one earned run in 0.1 innings.
Arizona’s starting pitcher Kohl Drake threw five innings, giving up four hits and one earned run with five strikeouts. Taylor Clarke, Juan Morillo, and Ryan Thompson provided relief, each earning a hold. Paul Sewald pitched a perfect inning but gave up two earned runs in the 10th. Kevin Ginkel closed the game with a scoreless inning to secure the win, improving his record to 4-3.
The game drew 19,709 fans to Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona. The win marks a significant moment for Arizona’s late-season push, while Oakland continues to fight for position in the standings.
