Keith and Skubal Lead Detroit Past Oakland

Colt Keith and Tarik Skubal delivered the decisive performances as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Oakland Athletics 6-2 at Comerica Park on Tuesday. Keith provided offensive momentum with two home runs, while Skubal controlled the mound with nine strikeouts over five innings. The victory improved Detroit’s record to 41-50, matching Oakland at 41-50 in the standings.

Early Power and Pitching Struggles

The Athletics struck first in the top of the first inning when Keith launched a 427-foot home run to right-center field. The blast drove in McGonigle, giving Oakland an early 2-0 lead. However, the Tigers quickly answered in the bottom of the first, tying the game 2-2 before taking the lead. Skubal was sharp for Detroit, limiting Oakland to just two earned runs on five hits while walking two batters. He departed after five innings, leaving the game with a 5-1 lead.

Oakland’s offense found another spark in the third inning when Bolte hit a 411-foot home run to left field, cutting the deficit to 5-3. The Athletics continued to chip away at the lead in the sixth inning. Malgeri doubled to right, bringing McKinstry home to make it 5-4. Vierling followed with a double to right, scoring Malgeri and Torkelson to tie the game at 5-5. McGonigle then singled to center, driving in Vierling to give Oakland a 6-5 advantage.

Relief Pitching Seals the Win

Despite the late surge, the Athletics could not hold the lead. Detroit’s bullpen stepped in to close the gap. Kyle Finnegan pitched a scoreless seventh inning, allowing one hit and striking out no batters. Drew Anderson followed with a perfect eighth, retiring the side in order with two strikeouts. Jacob Waguespack closed out the game in the ninth, pitching a hitless inning with one strikeout to secure the 6-5 victory.

Final Score and Records

The final score stood at 6-2 in favor of the Tigers. The Athletics’ pitching staff struggled with consistency. J.T. Ginn took the loss after allowing two earned runs on two hits in four innings. Jacob Lopez gave up four earned runs on five hits in three innings. Elvis Alvarado pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit and striking out three batters.

The game drew 28,736 fans to Comerica Park. With the win, Detroit improved to 41-50, while Oakland remained at 41-50. The Tigers’ ability to capitalize on key hits and Skubal’s dominance on the mound proved too much for Oakland to overcome.
