Trailing Efforts
The Athletics faced a steep hill to climb on Sunday, ultimately falling to the Miami Marlins with a final score of 7-2. Despite a late-inning surge that saw them score two runs in the ninth inning, Sacramento could not overcome an early deficit established by Miami’s offense and pitching staff. The loss drops the Athletics to a 41-48 record, while the Marlins improve to 48-42.
Marlins Offense Takes Control
Miami established dominance early, loading the scoreboard in the third inning. Mack opened the scoring with a home run to right field, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. The inning continued to expand when Lopez launched a 375-foot home run to left, driving in Hicks to make it 3-0. The Marlins extended their lead in the fifth inning when Lopez doubled to left field, allowing Sanoja to cross the plate for a 4-0 advantage.
The gap widened further in the seventh inning. Stowers homered to left center (377 feet), bringing Hicks home to push the score to 6-0. Although the Athletics managed to get on the board in the same inning via a sacrifice fly by McNeil that scored Bolte, the damage was already done. Miami added an insurance run in the ninth when Edwards singled to left, scoring Stowers.
Athletics Late Rally
Sacramento showed resilience in the final frame. Bolte reached on an infield single to shortstop, moving to second base. He later scored on a throwing error by Marlins shortstop Lopez, who was also credited with a run on the play, making the score 7-2. The Athletics’ late effort was not enough to change the outcome.
Pitching Performances
Sandy Alcantara was the standout pitcher for Miami, earning the win with eight innings of work. He allowed six hits and one earned run while striking out eight batters, improving his record to 10-4. Tyler Zuber closed out the game with one scoreless inning, though he did allow two hits and one earned run in his appearance.
For the Athletics, Aaron Civale took the loss, pitching 4.2 innings and giving up four earned runs on six hits. He struck out six batters before his outing ended, lowering his record to 5-6. Elvis Alvarado and Jose Suarez provided relief, with Alvarado pitching 0.1 innings and Suarez holding Miami scoreless over one inning. Kade Morris pitched three innings, allowing three earned runs on seven hits. The game was played at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento, California, with an attendance of 12,532.
