Athletics Fall to Rays 10-6 Despite Lopez's Solid Start

The Sacramento Athletics entered Tuesday’s contest at Sutter Health Park looking to build on their momentum, but a late-inning surge by the Tampa Bay Rays resulted in a 10-6 final score. The Athletics (47-72) fought hard to stay competitive, but ultimately could not contain the Rays (72-46) during a pivotal eighth inning.

Early Scoring and Pitching

Tampa Bay jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Díaz launched a home run to center field, measuring 439 feet. The Athletics responded immediately in the same frame. Soderstrom doubled to center, allowing McNeil to score, and later stole home after Cortes advanced on a throwing error by catcher Fortes, tying the game 1-1 before taking a 2-1 lead.

The Athletics extended their advantage in the fifth inning when Gelof homered to left-center field, a 456-foot shot that made it 3-1.

Jacob Lopez provided a strong outing for Sacramento, pitching seven innings. He allowed five hits and two earned runs while striking out five batters and issuing one walk. His performance kept the Athletics in the game, but the offense went silent for several innings.

Fortes scored on a groundout in the seventh, and Gelof added another run with a double, followed by a sacrifice fly from McNeil and a double by Wilson, giving the Athletics a 6-2 lead heading into the final innings.

The Eighth Inning Collapse

The game turned dramatically in the eighth inning. Caminero hit a three-run home run to left-center field, a 410-foot blast that tied the score at 6-6. The Rays quickly took the lead when Simpson singled, scoring Vilade, and Walls followed with a double to drive in two more runs, making it 8-6.

Díaz added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly, and Aranda scored the final run on a single, sealing the 10-6 victory for Tampa Bay.

Relief Work and Final Notes

Chris Roycroft earned the win for Tampa Bay, pitching one inning and allowing three hits and three earned runs. Tyler Wells pitched a scoreless inning, striking out three batters while allowing one hit and one walk. Kevin Kelly closed out the game with a perfect inning, striking out the side without allowing any hits or walks.

For the Athletics, Seth Johnson and Jose Suarez struggled in relief, combining to allow eight earned runs in less than an inning of work. Scott Blewett pitched 1.2 innings, allowing one hit and no earned runs. The final attendance was 7,427 at Sutter Health Park.
