Trailing Effort Falls Short

Early Runs Set the Tone
Washington took control early, breaking through in the third inning. Mead doubled to left field, allowing Nuñez and Young to score, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead. Chaparro followed with a single to left, bringing Mead home for a 3-0 advantage.
The Nationals extended their lead in the fourth inning when Young hit a ground rule double to score Ford, making it 4-0. The Athletics responded in the bottom of the fourth when Soderstrom homered to center field, a 415-foot shot that scored Wilson and cut the deficit to 4-2.
Offensive Explosion Continues
The Nationals’ offense reignited in the fifth inning. Chaparro homered to left center, a 467-foot blast that scored Mead, pushing the score to 6-2. Ford then homered to center field, driving in Crews to make it 8-2.
The sixth inning proved decisive for Washington. Wood singled to right, scoring Young and Nuñez. Chaparro singled to center, and despite a fielding error by center fielder Bolte that allowed Wood and Mead to score, Chaparro reached second safely.
Abrams doubled to center to score Chaparro, and Lile singled to right to bring Abrams home, making the score 14-2.
