The statewide average in California stands at $5.4550, while the national average is $3.8600. Motorists in the San Jose area are paying more than the state average and more than the national average.
Gas prices in the San Jose area have fallen substantially from their highs. Prices have dropped about 60 cents over the past month, driven by lower crude oil costs and strong refinery output. Compared to a year ago, when the state average was $4.5930, drivers are now paying about 86 cents more per gallon.
