A Heavy Sixth Inning Defined the Outcome
The San Diego Padres suffered a lopsided 15-3 defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Petco Park on Sunday. While the visiting team dominated the scoreboard, the game’s turning point arrived in the sixth inning, where Los Angeles erupted for nine runs to break open a tight contest.
The Dodgers’ surge began with a fielding error that allowed Freeman to score, making it 2-1. Edman followed with a triple to right, bringing Muncy home to extend the lead to 3-1. The inning continued to unravel for San Diego as Aaron Judge Tucker homered to right center, scoring Edman to make it 5-1. Rushing then added a solo home run to right center, pushing the score to 6-1.
Los Angeles continued to pile on the pressure. Freeman grounded out, allowing Freeland to score for a 7-1 lead. The inning culminated with Mookie Betts launching a three-run home run to center field, scoring Ohtani and Pages to make the score 10-1. This explosive sequence proved insurmountable for the home team, who could only manage a single run in the subsequent innings.
Pitching Decisions and Scoring Plays
For San Diego, Kyle Hart started on the mound, pitching two innings and allowing one earned run. Randy Vasquez took the loss after pitching 3 1/3 innings, giving up five earned runs on eight hits. The Padres’ offense found some life in the bottom of the sixth when Sheets homered to center field in the top of the inning to tie the game 1-1 earlier, and later singled to right in the sixth to score Taylor, making it 10-2. In the seventh, Tatis Jr. singled to left, scoring Wagner to bring the final score to 10-3 before the Dodgers’ final offensive flurry.
The Dodgers added three more runs in the eighth inning. Muncy reached on an infield single, scoring Ohtani. Edman then grounded out, allowing Pages to score. Tucker singled to left, driving in both Freeman and Muncy to make it 14-3. Ward singled to right in the ninth to score Pages, finalizing the 15-3 tally.
