A recent study by the San Francisco Estuary Institute highlights the potential health benefits of rain gardens in Bay Area cities, revealing their effectiveness in filtering toxic pollution. Researchers have identified numerous harmful substances, including pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and microplastics, that stormwater runoff carries into the Bay.
Senior Scientist Rebecca Sutton, Ph.D., noted that the contaminants vary widely, with some being regulated and others classified as emerging pollutants. The study aimed to find effective methods to prevent these pollutants from entering local waterways.
Melissa Foley, Ph.D., who leads the Resilient Landscapes Program at the Institute, explained that the team conducted tests on stormwater flowing into and out of rain gardens at four locations in San Francisco. The results showed that these gardens significantly reduced levels of 21 different contaminants, with many pollutants decreased by 90% or more.
The study also examined the rain gardens' ability to filter emerging contaminants, which they were not specifically designed to address. The findings were promising, indicating that rain gardens effectively removed various unregulated pollutants, including microplastics and toxic substances from car tires.
Foley expressed enthusiasm about the unexpected benefits of rain gardens, stating, "This was actually a really exciting co-benefit that comes with this type of technology where we're actually removing all kinds of additional chemicals."
