Business owners along Santa Cruz Avenue and Los Gatos Boulevard are displaying patriotic decorations to mark the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States. For Margaret Smith, who has operated Domus on Santa Cruz Avenue since 1996, hanging red, white, and blue bunting is an act of hope that extends beyond retail tradition. She has maintained this practice for three decades, starting at her home and extending to neighboring storefronts.

Smith views the displays as symbols of unity and tradition. However, she also expressed concern that the inclusivity she values is eroding. Smith, who is a second-generation American on her mother’s side and descends from families that settled in the U.S. in the 1700s, said she finds it disturbing to see the country’s ability to bring together different cultures and belief systems diminishing.

At Gallery 24, the reflection on patriotism is taking shape through art. The gallery is showcasing approximately 100 miniature paintings by resident artists in a collection titled “America the Beautiful.” Co-director Joan Drennan stated that the group wanted to highlight the beauty of the country, noting that many storefronts are displaying patriotic symbols. The artworks include depictions of American scenery, the Statue of Liberty, churches, pies, and hamburgers.

Drennan pointed to California’s climate and the nation’s freedoms as sources of pride. Co-director Julia Watson cited patriotic songs like “This Land Is Your Land” and “America the Beautiful” as favorites. Watson admired the nation’s highest values, distinguishing them from current practices, and emphasized what the country should strive to achieve.

Los Gatos Parkside, located about 4 miles southeast of Saratoga, has also decorated its interior and outdoor dining areas with American flags and bunting. Assistant general manager Bryce Shore said staff brought out the decorations to celebrate both the Fourth of July and the U.S. team in the World Cup. The restaurant has added televisions to accommodate fans watching the games, creating an energetic atmosphere.

Shore described the energy as infectious, noting that patrons root for the United States and other nations with personal ties. He highlighted the country’s democracy and diversity as reasons for pride, calling it a special place where people from various backgrounds can call their home. Smith noted that small businesses remain tied to the global economy, complicating the display of American-made goods during the holiday season.
