San Jose is increasing police presence and reviewing crowd management strategies following violence at a recent World Cup watch party. The city is making these adjustments after two people were stabbed and several others were arrested during a gathering for Mexico’s match last Wednesday. The event drew more than 40,000 fans to the downtown area.
San Jose Police Department Assistant Chief Ali Miri confirmed that additional personnel will be deployed to the downtown core. This includes special operations units to help manage the crowds. City leaders stated they are reviewing the operations from Wednesday before the next official watch parties take place.
Mayor Matt Mahan emphasized the need for changes to prevent similar incidents. He noted that it is not safe to have such large numbers of people crowded into a small space. Officials plan to make adjustments before the next Mexico match to improve safety.
Despite the violence, fans continued to celebrate at San Pedro Square on Wednesday. Elizabeth Henderson, who attended the event, described the atmosphere as incredible and well-suited for the occasion. She expressed that the energy was exceptional and could not have been better anywhere else.
San Jose is located about 9 miles northeast of Saratoga. The city is preparing for future events by implementing stricter security measures. Authorities aim to balance the celebration with public safety as the World Cup continues.
