SAN JOSE, California — Technology companies have disclosed plans to eliminate approximately 10,900 jobs in the Bay Area during the first six months of 2026, already surpassing the roughly 10,170 layoffs recorded in all of 2025, according to state employment data.
The pace of workforce reductions has more than doubled compared to the same period last year, when tech firms reported about 4,700 cuts in the first half of 2025. The figures come from WARN Act notices filed with the California Employment Development Department, which require advance notice of mass layoffs.

Cisco Systems, headquartered in San Jose, recently disclosed plans to cut 471 positions across three Bay Area locations — 236 in San Jose, 154 in Milpitas, and 81 in San Francisco — effective July 13. Bill.com, also based in San Jose, filed notice of 129 layoffs effective August 24. The cuts span software, hardware, networking, and financial technology sectors.
The accelerating layoff trend contrasts with earlier expectations that post-pandemic tech industry restructuring had largely run its course. Instead, companies continue to trim payrolls amid ongoing pressure to reduce costs and restructure operations around artificial intelligence priorities.
