A quiet night for Cleveland

The Cleveland Guardians were held scoreless in a 5-0 loss to the San Diego Padres at Progressive Field on Sunday, August 16, 2026. The home team failed to record a single run as the away squad exploited gaps in the Cleveland lineup. The final score reflected a complete defensive and offensive effort by San Diego, leaving the Guardians with a 60-65 record after the contest.

San Diego's offensive surge

The Padres took control early in the second inning. Rengifo led off the scoring with a home run to center field that traveled 409 feet. Sheets followed with a drive to right field that carried 367 feet, extending the lead to 2-0.

The momentum continued in the fourth inning when Bogaerts singled to center, allowing Merrill to score and put the game out of reach. By the eighth inning, Bowen added another home run to right field, a 366-foot shot that made it 4-0. Cronenworth capped the scoring in the ninth with a 403-foot home run to right center, finalizing the 5-0 margin.

Pitching performance

Casey Mize secured the win for San Diego, pitching six innings. He allowed three hits and one walk while striking out three batters. Mize did not allow earned runs, marking his first victory for the Padres as his record improved to 5-7.

Guardians' struggle

Relievers Matt Festa, Tim Herrin, Logan Allen, and Cade Smith shared the final innings. Festa pitched one inning allowing one hit. Herrin pitched two-thirds of an inning, allowing one hit and one earned run while striking out two.
