The Kansas City Royals faced an insurmountable offensive challenge on Sunday, July 19, at Kauffman Stadium, ultimately succumbing to a 19-2 defeat against the San Diego Padres. The game was defined by San Diego’s ability to string together hits and capitalize on defensive miscues, while Kansas City struggled to generate any meaningful momentum despite a brief spark in the early innings.
Early Struggles and Late Rally
San Diego established control early. In the first inning, Caglianone launched a 432-foot home run to right field, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead. The Padres expanded their advantage in the second inning, scoring four runs.
Tatis Jr. drove in two with a single to right, followed by a sacrifice fly from Machado that scored Tatis Jr. from third. By the end of the second, San Diego led 4-1.
Kansas City managed to get on the board in the third inning when Collins doubled to center, scoring Caglianone. However, the Padres immediately responded in the fourth with a Merrill home run to left center, extending the lead to 6-2. Tatis Jr. added another solo shot in the sixth inning, making it 8-2.
The game appeared to be out of reach in the eighth inning when Tatis Jr. grounded into a fielder's choice. An error by shortstop Tolbert allowed Rengifo to score and Song to advance to third. This set the stage for a massive eighth-inning rally by San Diego.
Ty France homered to left (365 feet), driving in three runs, including Song and Tatis Jr. to make it 13-2.
