Trailing Effort Falls Flat

The Minnesota Twins entered Saturday’s contest with hopes of snapping their recent struggles, but a resilient San Diego Padres squad proved too difficult to overcome. Despite early defensive lapses that allowed San Diego to build an insurmountable lead, the Twins’ offense generated just enough momentum in the middle innings to keep the game competitive before ultimately falling 6-2 at Petco Park.

Early Deficit Defines Contest

San Diego struck first and hardest in the opening frame. France connected on a 421-foot home run to left center, driving in two runs and giving the home team an immediate 2-0 advantage. The blast set the tone for the night, forcing Minnesota starter Connor Prielipp to navigate a precarious path from the outset.

Prielipp worked hard to keep the Twins within striking distance, pitching six innings and allowing only two earned runs on eight hits while striking out seven batters. However, the early deficit forced him to work deeper into the game than desired. He was supported by relievers Travis Adams and Taylor Rogers, who combined for two scoreless innings.

Adams issued two walks in his inning of work, while Rogers retired the side efficiently with two strikeouts.

Twins Seize Moment in Fourth

Minnesota finally answered back in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded or runners in scoring position, Alex Buxton and Andrew Bell scored on a triple by Gerrit Clemens to right field. The three-run play tied the game at 2-2, giving the visitors a brief window of optimism.

It was the only time the Twins led or were level with the Padres for any significant duration.

San Diego Pulls Away in Fifth

The turning point arrived in the fifth inning when San Diego’s offense exploded for four runs. Fernando Tatis Jr. opened the rally with a single to right, bringing Hunter Hays home from second base. Alejandro Rengifo followed with a hit to left, scoring Jake Cronenworth.

Machado then singled to right to bring Tatis Jr. home, and France capped the inning with a sacrifice fly to deep right, driving in Rengifo.

The four-run barrage gave San Diego a 6-2 lead that Minnesota could not threaten. Randy Vasquez earned the win for the Padres, pitching seven innings of solid baseball. He allowed two earned runs on two hits but walked no batters, striking out three.

Bradgley Rodriguez and Mason Miller closed out the game with perfect innings, combining to strike out four batters without allowing a hit or walk.

Final Standings Context

The loss drops the Twins to 63-66 on the season. The Padres improve their record to 69-60 with the victory. The game drew an attendance of 44,293 fans to Petco Park.
