Early Deficit Proves Too Much to Overcome

The Colorado Rockies found themselves chasing the scoreboard from the outset on Sunday, July 5, 2026. A four-run explosion in the opening frame set the tone for the contest at Coors Field, a lead the home team would chase for the remainder of the afternoon. Despite a late rally that brought the score to within one run, the San Francisco Giants held on for a 6-4 victory, improving their record to 37-51 while the Rockies dropped to 36-54.

Giants Strike First and Often

San Francisco’s offense was efficient early, stringing together hits to build a commanding advantage. The inning began with Lee grounding into a fielder's choice that allowed Arraez to score, putting the Giants ahead 1-0. Willy Adames then doubled to left field, driving in two more runs to extend the lead to 3-0. The damage continued as Eldridge doubled to left, bringing Adames home to make it 4-0 before the Rockies could respond.

Sean Sullivan took the mound for Colorado, working hard to keep the game close despite the early deficit. He pitched 5.2 innings, allowing 12 hits and 6 earned runs while striking out four batters. However, the Giants' offense remained relentless. In the second inning, Arraez singled to right, scoring Ramos to push the score to 5-3. The Giants added an insurance run in the third inning when Eldridge homered to right center, a 458-foot shot that made the score 6-3.

Rockies Fight Back in the Ninth

Colorado refused to go away quietly. In the bottom of the first, Carrigg homered to left field, a 393-foot shot that scored Goodman and Freeman, cutting the Giants' lead to 4-3. The Rockies’ bullpen worked to keep the game within reach. Juan Mejia pitched 1.1 innings with no earned runs, followed by Antonio Senzatela and Jordan Romano, who each pitched a scoreless inning. Romano struck out two batters in his frame, helping to preserve the deficit.

The Rockies’ hopes were reignited in the ninth inning. Rumfield singled to left field, allowing Carrigg to score and bring the final score to 6-4. The attempt fell short, however. San Francisco’s relief corps closed the door effectively. Sam Hentges and Dylan Smith each pitched a scoreless inning, combining for one strikeout each. Caleb Kilian secured the save, pitching a perfect final frame with two hits allowed and two strikeouts.

Pitching Performance and Final Score

Robbie Ray earned the win for San Francisco, pitching 6.0 innings. He allowed five hits and three earned runs while walking three batters and striking out four. The Giants’ pitching staff held the powerful Rockies lineup in check for most of the game, limiting the home team to just one earned run after the first inning. The final attendance at Coors Field was 48,635.
