The Los Angeles Chargers have completed their 53-man roster for the 2026 season, making several notable changes before the deadline. On August 30, the team traded cornerback Avery Smith to the Seattle Seahawks for a sixth-round pick in the 2027 draft and defensive lineman TeRah Edwards to the Carolina Panthers for a sixth-round pick in the 2028 draft.
These trades are pending physicals before being finalized.
Safety Tony Jefferson, who has almost 11 years of NFL experience, was initially considered at risk of being cut. However, following Smith's trade, he is now expected to stay with the team. In roster cuts, starting punter J.K. Scott was released after a disappointing preseason, where he averaged only 33.7 yards on three punts against the Rams.
Running back Gregory Desrosiers had a strong performance in the preseason finale, rushing for 118 yards and a touchdown, but was waived along with several others, including Jaret Patterson and Amar Johnson. Quarterback Trey Lance secured his position over DJ Uiagalelei, who was waived but may return to the practice squad. Linebacker Marlowe Wax made the roster, surpassing third-round pick Junior Colson.
The Chargers also waived multiple players, including wide receivers and defensive players, with some placed on reserve/injured designations for potential return.
