The Los Angeles Chargers have not settled any of their ongoing position battles following their 27-7 win over the Houston Texans in their preseason opener. Head coach Jim Harbaugh emphasized that competition remains fierce as the team prepares for the upcoming roster decisions.

With the deadline for setting the initial 53-man roster approaching on August 30, the Chargers will conduct seven training camp practices, a scrimmage against the San Francisco 49ers, and additional preseason games against both the 49ers and Rams. The offensive line, particularly the left guard position, has been a major focus, with general manager Joe Hortiz making several adjustments since March.

Rookies Travis Burke, Jake Slaughter, and Logan Taylor played significant roles, with Burke receiving commendation from Harbaugh for his performance.

Decisions loom regarding whether to retain nine or as many as 11 offensive linemen. The competition for the backup quarterback spot has also intensified, highlighted by Trey Lance's starting performance that initially led to a 13-7 advantage, before DJ Uiagalelei took over and threw two touchdown passes, including one to rookie Devonte Ross.

Defensively, the Chargers limited the Texans to one touchdown, 98 passing yards, and 111 rushing yards. Rookie outside linebacker Akheem Mesidor impressed the coaching staff with his technique and effort, despite limited playtime. Left tackle Rashawn Slater missed his fifth consecutive practice while recovering from a knee injury sustained last season, with no further updates on his condition.
