While the idea of both Herbert brothers playing together is appealing, it is not expected to happen in the immediate future. The Chargers currently have tight ends David Njoku, Charlie Kolar, and Oronde Gadsden II in front of him on the depth chart. Patrick will need to demonstrate his abilities to earn playing time.
Patrick Herbert is primarily seen as a blocking tight end, which could enhance the team's depth as they refine their offensive strategy. Last season, he was part of Jacksonville's practice squad and made two receptions for a total of 12 yards during the preseason. In his college career at Oregon, he accumulated 31 catches for 388 yards and scored four touchdowns across 43 games.
Although these numbers are not particularly striking, his blocking skills and size may offer him a chance to carve out a role with the Chargers.
Having grown up with Justin, Patrick is well-acquainted with his brother's playing style. However, the Chargers will assess Patrick's performance independently of his family ties. For now, this signing is significant for the Herbert family, but Patrick must prove himself to secure a position on the field.
