In the final preseason matchup for the Los Angeles Chargers, DJ Uiagalelei showcased a stronger performance compared to Trey Lance, although the team has not yet decided on a backup quarterback for Justin Herbert.
Lance, who directed the offense for two drives, was unable to complete any passes, resulting in a three-and-out on one series and a sack on fourth-and-1 on the other. Uiagalelei, on the other hand, had a more productive outing, completing 11 passes for a total of 141 yards.
Following the game, head coach Jim Harbaugh noted, "I thought he did some good things" when discussing Uiagalelei’s performance. Harbaugh had previously mentioned that both quarterbacks were competing for the backup role.
Lance was drafted third overall by the San Francisco 49ers in 2021, a move that involved a significant trade. Despite high expectations, he has had difficulty progressing as a quarterback in his first five NFL seasons. Uiagalelei, an undrafted rookie who spent last season on the practice squad, lacks regular-season experience.
The decision on who will back up Herbert remains uncertain as both players have shown inconsistencies throughout the preseason.
