Gracen Halton, a first-year defensive tackle with the San Francisco 49ers, is leaving a strong mark at training camp through his dynamic energy and performance. His enthusiastic celebrations after successful plays have become a source of excitement for both teammates and rivals.
In a recent practice session, Halton displayed his talent by excelling in a one-on-one drill, earning praise from veteran tackle Trent Williams, who is also an alumnus of the University of Oklahoma. Williams commended Halton for his explosive speed and strength, drawing a comparison to former 49ers player D.J. Jones, now with the Denver Broncos.
Weighing nearly 300 pounds, Halton recorded an impressive 40-yard dash time of 4.82 seconds.
During the preseason opener versus the Tennessee Titans, Halton showcased his skills by bringing down quarterback Cam Ward and tackling running back Tyjae Spears for a loss on back-to-back plays, although one of the sacks was nullified by a penalty. After recovering from a hyperextended knee injury that kept him out for the first week of training camp, Halton quickly made his presence known.
He likened his mindset to that of a lion hunting its prey, saying, "That’s what I like to do. I imagine myself as a lion going out to get the gazelle."
In addition to Halton's performance, receivers Mike Evans and Jacob Cowing returned from injuries, with Cowing catching a deep pass from quarterback Mac Jones. Brock Purdy connected with tight end Luke Farrell during a move-the-ball session, though the play was negated by a sack from Osa Odighizuwa. Purdy completed 7 of 14 passes, while Jones had 11 completions out of 15 attempts, including one interception.
